GC2017 Trip Report [Day 20 | 3 February 2017]

How are we reaching the end of our journey already??

I’m ready for a shower, I’m ready for a run, I’m ready for my blood sugar to return to normal, I’m ready to see Sarge.

But I’m not ready to leave this place.

River Day 20 was a super relaxed day on the water. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. It was like a light was switched on when we entered February in the Grand Canyon. I remember being so warm inside my dry suit in the sun that I actually wanted to get wet so I would stop feeling like I’d have a heat stroke.

We saw our new river friend as we passed by his camp and decided to pull over and have our lunch while chatting with him. He informed us that he thought another group might be at our desired camp, but that they would probably be willing to share since the camp is so big.

The best thing about a winter trip through the Grand Canyon is not needing to fight for a camp. There are so few people that you really do have your pick of camp site.

We arrived at Granite Park Camp to find the other group there. They were super nice and totally ok with sharing camp with us for the night. We planned to lay over, and they were heading out the next morning, so everything worked out.

Since they had the prime camping area down by the river, we had to lug our stuff up quite a ways. I think some people were annoyed or upset, but there wasn’t anything we could do about it, so I didn’t feel the need to put much emotion into it. We were lucky they were willing to share, so I kept a positive attitude.

Once camp was set up Nick, Evan, and Cassy went for a hike to this peak we lovingly referred to as “the boobs”. I wanted to relax and was content to sit in the sun reading a book.

Granite Park Camp is super special to Nick and I. It’s where he proposed during GC2015! I’m so glad we got the opportunity to stay there again.
