13.1 Things No One Told You About Training for a Half Marathon

13.1, Giveaway, Half Marathon, Happy Healthy Fit, Running

Autumn is right around the corner. For a lot of runners this means at least one big race. Or maybe you are newer to running and have your first race coming up {if this is you– congrats!}.

My next half marathon is coming up in a few weeks. I’ll be running the Wineglass Half Marathon for the third year in a row. With thoughts of half marathons on my mind, today I share with you 13.1 things no one told you about training for a half marathon.

1. Forget any dreams of being a foot model. Blisters, black and missing toenails, swollen feet– you get the picture. Running long takes a toll on your feet.

2. You will know weird, but exact, distances to random landmarks. And if it comes up in conversation you’ll make sure to tell people that “it’s exactly 3.51 miles to the sign on the left side of the road by the horse farm” or something equally ridiculous.

3. You don’t have to look like a runner to be a runner.

4. You will learn to eat like it’s your job.

5. Some runs will make you feel like a total rock star.

6. And some runs will make you question why you paid $80 to be tortured.

7. Non-runners will never fully understand why you want to wake up early on a Saturday to get your long run in.

8. You can’t be a germaphobe. Yep, running can be gross. And running in an organized race can be even more gross. Don’t even bother questioning why the volunteer reached into a bowl of grapes with no gloves and gave you a handful. Just eat them and be thankful.

9. Eventually you might not be able to get the smell out of your running clothes. Just accept it and attribute it to the fact that you must be running a lot if they smell that bad 😉

10. Running is 90% mental. Trust me, your body can handle almost anything. It’s your mind that needs convincing.

11. Walking is okay. You’ll even feel stronger later in your race if you take planned walk breaks. Just be courteous to other runners and pull to the side before starting to walk during a race.

12. Comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Run your own race.

13. During the race you might tell yourself you will never sign up for another half marathon again. Then within hours of finishing you’ll be searching for your next race.

13.1 The feeling of setting a goal, training for that goal, and ultimately crossing the finish line and accomplishing that goal is a feeling you will never forget.
