Marathon Training Monday {Week 1} & #7DayStretch Challenge

Welcome to Marathon Training Monday!

In this weekly series I share the details of my Marine Corps Marathon training plan. Marine Corps Marathon is my 4th marathon ๐Ÿ™‚ I feel strong and ready to set a PR! This training plan is based off the philosophy that 3 days per week of targeted running is all you need for a successful marathon. Of course, you should stay active in other ways, but junk miles can hurt you in the long term.

Daily Details – How I Got it Done

Monday: Boot Camp with Melissa! This workout was two days after the Pike’s Peak Ascent. Surprisingly, I wasn’t terribly sore going into it. It felt great to get my body moving. We did a total body circuit with a short team activity at the end.

Tuesday: Morning yoga from the online Grokker video collection {check out my collection here}. I love how simple this website is to use.

Wednesday: Speed Day! Man, was this tough. It’s been months since I’ve done a speed day. We’ve been so focused on hill training since the Blue Ridge Half Marathon this past April. This workout started with a 10 minute warm-up run, then moved on to the fun part– 14×1:00 minute repeats at 8.8 mph with 1:00 minute rest in between. I finished the last repeat at 9.0 mph, but only for 5 seconds. Still counts though ๐Ÿ˜‰ Total mileage = 3.5 miles.

Thursday: Another morning yoga session with Grokker. Let me tell you how sore I was from speed work the day before– yikes those quads were crying. After work I spent about 40 minutes on the elliptical.

Friday: A short 3 mile morning run. I was still sore from Wednesday’s speed work. I’m hoping that week 2 will get better. I plan to start upping the mileage of my midweek run, but this week I still felt like I needed to recover. Average pace was 9:21 min/mi– not too bad! Especially considering that I felt like I was moving through molasses.

Saturday: The long run. First official long run of marathon training. It was hard. This type of running is vastly different from Pike’s Peak Ascent training. I lost a lot of my speed over the course of Pike’s Peak training. I was also having some issues with nutrition. I always struggle to eat enough in the early morning hours before a long run. The first 9-ish miles of the run were fine– and at a normal / slightly slower pace. The rest were a struggle with most of the final 2 miles being walked. I have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks to be ready for Marine Corps Marathon. Total mileage = 16.4 miles.

Sunday: Finally some time on the bicycle! Total mileage = 25 miles.

That’s a Wrap

That about sums up my first week of official marathon training. I think it will be fun to report out how each week is going. Great way to stay accountable and motivated!
