Monthly Miles is a newer monthly feature here at Unapologetically You. This is a great way for me to reflect on the miles I put in over the past month, find areas to improve, and encourage other to put a few miles in over the coming month 🙂
So let’s get started!
As I mentioned in the first edition of Monthly Miles, I track my cycling miles as “equivalent miles” based on calorie burn. A running mile is not equivalent to a cycling mile.
May Miles – 221 miles
Running – 112 miles
Cycling – 237 miles
YTD Equivalent Miles – 710 miles
This is my highest mileage month so far in 2015– which can partially be attributed to prepping for the SMECO 75 mile bike ride on June 6th.
I ran one race during the month of May. I finished the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon yesterday. It was hot, humid, and very sunny. Not my best race. But I guess we can’t expect every race we do to be significantly better than the last. There will always be an ebb and flow to how you perform.
ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon!
In addition to the ZOOMA half marathon I ran the 10-mile St. Mary’s Lake loop 4 times with Nick and Sarge. We ran from the house so each run was closer to 12 miles total. The hardest run I did during the month of May was hill repeats on a section of the trail used for the Catotin 50K. Nick, Sarge and I did 4 repeats for a total of approximately 16 miles as part of our preparation for the Pike’s Peak Ascent. It was challenging and fun.

I did 3 speed workouts during the month of May. The speed workouts were done as 1.5 mile warmup, 14×1:00 min repeats at 9.0 – 9.2 mph, then cool down until reaching 5 miles total (usually less than a mile). There were a few short and middle distance runs throughout the month; several walks with the little buddy in addition to the planned workout of the day; and approximately 20 miles on the elliptical for the month.
Cycling miles were broken up into 61, 70, 71 and 34 mile rides. I ride a hybrid bike and that many miles takes a lot longer than it would on a road bike. My butt was definitely feeling it each time! Looking forward to my first organized bike ride next weekend!

In addition to the miles I logged in May I also did strength training once a week and boot camp with Melissa twice. I participated in the #LoveYourHips 14-Day Yoga Challenge and consistently practiced a bit of yoga every day for each of those 14 days. And as always, tried to get in as much stretching and foam rolling as I could.

May held a lot of fun miles! Now I want to hear about YOUR miles this month? 🙂 Whether you’re training for an upcoming race or just training “for life” I would love to hear what you’ve been up to. Feel free to leave me a comment below!
