Getting a personal trainer is a very individual and personal choice for everyone. Maybe you’re looking for someone to push and motivate you; help you lose those last 5-10 lbs; teach you something new; or maybe you’re new to an exercise program and are looking for some professional guidance. Whatever your reason, getting a personal trainer is a great way to add a challenge to your fitness regiment.
This past week I started working with Certified Personal Trainer, Casey Glassey, of True You Fitness. Let me start by telling you that she is awesome 🙂 If you’re in the Southern Maryland area and are considering starting a program with a trainer– I highly recommend checking out what Casey has to offer. If you’ve been reading Unapologetically You for awhile now you may be wondering what made me decide to take this leap. I’ve been running consistently for the past 5 years, and have made huge improvements in my running, especially in my race times. I don’t need help staying motivated, and if I can make improvements by doing my own research, why start working with a trainer? That’s a great question– and one that Nick asked when I first brought this up.
For me it really came down to wanting to become stronger; which, in turn will make me a better runner. I’ve been saying for years now that my exercise program is missing the strength training component, and that I really should start. I did try to start once, but I didn’t stick with it; and I didn’t believe Nick when he told me I could do more or that I could push myself harder. It frustrated both of us so we just stopped and haven’t tried again.
I love that Nick and I do most of our exercising together. Staying fit and active is important to both of us, and most of our hobbies revolve around being active. I think our relationship is stronger because we exercise together 🙂 But, when it came to adding strength training to my exercise routine, I wanted and needed an unbiased and certified source who could push and teach me.
I’m excited for this 12-week journey with Casey. We’ll be focusing a lot on core and upper body strength. Two areas where I’m severely lacking. During the demo workout I felt totally embarrassed by how much I struggled with very basic core and upper body exercises– here I am, someone who runs long distance for fun and considers herself relatively fit, but needed to have a lot of modifications in this first workout. I’ve told Casey that I’m going to love and dread coming to see her each week 🙂
We’ll be taking body fat measurements during our next session. I have no idea where I stand right now, so it will be neat to see the percentage, and how it (hopefully) changes over the next 12 weeks. I’m excited to be pushed, to get stronger, and to overall become a better version of myself through this adventure!
